Take an In-Depth Look into Jammer, the Character

In hopes of keeping communication alive, we decided to start expanding a bit of our dev logs here to give more behind the scenes info and insights on the development of Jammer and future games to come!

For our first dive-in, we’ll be focusing on the main character of Fox God Games’ first release, Jammer!

Who is the main character of Jammer?

Well, Jammer is simply Jammer! They’re a new recruit, a young soldier that’s ready to make a name for themselves in this war against their nation. It’s Jammer’s first test on the real battlefield, along with yours as well.

How did Jammer come about as a character?

(Shadow Fox)  Who knows, lol. It’s a bit of a throwback to the retro feel, I think a lot of the inspiration actually comes from certain GI Joe figurines from the 90s. The kind of visor-style setup. There used to be these old Predator toys, too, that had laser attachments or whatever that would shoot bullets. I think strapping a GI Joe with one of those laser attachments, with a rubber band, was probably the biggest inspiration here. Of course, Samus from Metroid, and just the general neon purple-blue throwback style that’s come back full force over the last decade or two.

Snippets of Jammer’s spritesheet (including unused art!)

(Shadow Fox)  The main focus was to try to keep Balloon Fight’s style of having two balloons serve as lives. That was really the biggest point of having the two circular drone-like attachments on the side. In the end, we went away from using the life system for Jammer, but the look remained on the character because we felt it fit the style really well.

Who is the person behind the mask? Tell us!

(Shadow Fox)  It’s a secret, lol. In actuality, I think keeping that mystique is part of the charm. Though in essence, Jammer is really supposed to be you.  Of course, there’s always lore to expand on, a universe to build upon, so maybe one day Jammer will be unmasked and revealed to the public. For now though, their adventure is simply landmarked by how many enemies you can manage to kill in the game!

What else can you tell us about Jammer and the character?

(Shadow Fox)  When I first thought of the idea of Jammer, many years ago, it was just a small image in my head of someone flying a spaceship with neon purple and blue, and that’s about it. However the intent, back then, was for it to be a movie! I was in a movie script writing phase of my life, and I thought it would be fun to make some sort of retro 80s movie based on a spaceship pilot that knocked out energy shields. Well, it was an idea that was stashed away for many years until it seemed like the perfect fit for our first game! Funny how things happen sometimes.

That’s all for this time’s Devlog. Keep your eyes peeled for more information and insights into Fox God Games’ developments and ongoing projects! The team is quite new to being active and social on social media, so we’re still getting into the habit of putting out regular news for everyone to catch up on, but we’ll learn with time! Tune in next time!
